It is the Holy month of Ramadan and Muslims all over the world have begun fasting. Ramadan is a month where believers learn to exercise self-control. A major facet of this is the abstinence from food and drink “fasting” that is prescribed to all healthy Muslims during the hours of sunrise to sunset. Communities in Action, supported by the Department of Health, have produced the “Ramadan Health Guide” in order to provide information and advice on maximising health gain during the Muslim fast.
Plan joins huge relief effort in flood-hit Pakistan: Aid workers from Plan International have joined the massive relief effort to help families hit by Pakistan’s worst flooding in 80 years. Unconfirmed reports have put the death toll as high as 1,800, while as many as 2.5 million people are caught up in the crisis. Outbreaks of diarrhoea and cholera are now real fears, while food and drinking water are in short supply. You can help by calling 0300 777 9777 or making an online donation.
The Men's Health Forum in partnership with the Royal Society of Public Health is organising a symposium on men, physical activity and sport in London on 25th November 2010. Building on the theme from this year's Men's Health Week in June, the event will bring together a range of people with expertise in physical activity, sport, men’s health, health promotion, health policy and related areas to discuss key issues

Call to involve disabled people in HEFCE policy making. HEFCE invites disabled people and those in higher education (HE) who support them to become involved in HEFCE policy making over the next 12 months. Anyone wishing to do so is invited to express their interest by 24 September 2010. This would be a one-year commitment requiring little to no travel.
“Public Health specialists should be at the heart of commissioning” Professor Lindsey Davies, President of the Faculty of Public Health, has written to the 3,500 members of the FPH, updating them on processes currently in place to gather opinion for eventual response to the NHS White Paper and to feed into government consultation on the upcoming Public Health White Paper.
UK and India announce joint funding call to combat worlds biggest health threat:
The Medical Research Council (MRC) and the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) have announced today a commitment to jointly fund research into chronic non-communicable diseases, a group of conditions responsible for approximately 60 per cent of deaths worldwide. The £4 million initiative will focus on practical interventions to prevent and treat diseases such as diabetes, stroke and heart disease
Unhealthy parents put their children’s lives at risk warns GP leader. Professor Steve Field – Chairman of the Royal College of General Practitioners representing 42,000 GPs across the UK – says parents have to face up to the serious impact that their own personal behaviour has on their children and urges them to become healthy role models so that their children can live long, healthy and fulfilling lives.
Personal responsibility health agenda 'welcomed'. The coalition government’s stress on personal responsibility for health is being welcomed by experts - but they warn people still need some help in improving their lifestyles. Professor Alan Maryon-Davis, president of the Faculty of Public Health, said: "Personal responsibility is crucial - but people can be helped to choose the healthier option - especially when it comes to food.”
NICE has recently opened the consultation on its draft clinical guideline on the diagnosis and assessment of food allergies in children and young people. Its aim is to support GPs and other health professionals in primary care and community settings in recognizing the signs and symptoms of food allergy, by giving clear recommendations on taking allergy-focused histories to assess the condition.
Taking care of the water in your home. The Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) has recently reported that water quality in England and Wales remains at a very high standard, with 99.95 per cent of tests carried out in 2009 meeting very strict criteria. But the Consumer Council for Water wants to remind consumers of the steps they can take to ensure the quality of water coming to their homes is as good when it comes out of their taps.
Restaurants and pubs may be forced to reveal calorie counts. Andrew Lansley, the Health Secretary, has signaled he will change the law if food businesses do not respond to attempts to introduce a voluntary industry system.
Hundreds of community playground schemes in England are being axed or scaled back because of government cuts. Education Secretary Michael Gove has frozen grants to 132 councils for building and running up to 1,300 schemes, many designed by youngsters.
Cities are lagging behind on cycling schemes. Major cities around Britain are still lacking proper cycling infrastructure and innovative thinking on cycling schemes, the Faculty of Public Health (FPH) has said.
Review of future of Dr Foster Intelligence. The future of Dr Foster Intelligence, one of the UK’s main providers of information, analysis and targeted communications to health and social care organisations, is under review, the Department of Health and Dr Foster Holdings LLP have announced.

The NGO Forum has developed a resource to help voluntary and community sector organisations address health inequalities. The resource ‘A planning guide: health inequalities and the voluntary and community sector’has been produced to encourage voluntary groups and their partners to place tackling health inequalities at the top of their agenda. World Humanitarian Day

In an effort to raise public awareness of humanitarian assistance, the General Assembly has designated 19 August as World Humanitarian Day. The day honors those, who have lost their lives in humanitarian service and those, who continue to bring assistance and relief to millions. It also seeks to draw attention to humanitarian needs worldwide and to explain what humanitarian aid work entails.
