Indices of multiple deprivation: find the poorest places in England
The Indices, published by the Department for Communities and Local Government, examines poverty through a number of significant indicators – aiming to identify the poorest areas for alleviation policy. The figures haven't been calculated since 2007 and they show that:

  • Over 5 million people live in the most deprived areas in England and 38% of them were poor
  • Liverpool, Middlesbrough, Manchester, Knowsley, Hull, Hackney and Tower Hamlets are the local authorities with the highest number of areas among the most deprived in England
  • The most deprived areas are in cities - 98% in fact
  • Using the data, we can pinpoint the most deprived place in England: Jaywick Sands in Essex

Asthma UK has received a prestigious science communication. NGO Forum member Asthma UK received an award from the Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC) for the research information on our website.
The AMRC represents 126 member charities and runs its Science Communication Awards every two years. The entries are judged by an independent panel of experts in science communication, public engagement, PR, publishing and design.

MIND And Federation Of Small Businesses Launch Guidance On Mental Health In The Workplace, UK
The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has teamed up with MIND to publish guidance to help small firms manage mental health and wellbeing in the workplace and support their staff.
Conditions such as anxiety, depression and unmanageable stress affect one in six British workers each year, and can cost businesses up to £26 billion annually. However, simple steps can help to manage mental health issues in the workplace and promote the wellbeing of staff which could save firms up to one third of these costs.

A united front against dementia. Forty five organisations from the charity, public and private sectors have come together to form the largest ever united front against dementia. The Dementia Action Alliance has been set up to bring about radical changes in the way society responds to dementia and to transform quality of life for people living with the condition.

Exercise link to low depression. This was a large cross-sectional study that has provided more detail on the relationship between leisure-time and work-based physical activity. The study has several strengths, notably its size and the detailed information collected on both social and biological factors. 

HPV testing and vaccination could cut cervical screening to twice in a lifetime. Women who have had the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine could need only two HPV screening tests for the rest of their lives according to new calculations being presented at the NCRI Cancer Conference in Liverpool. 

Men’s lives too short says new charity campaign. Too many men are still dying far too young. 22% of men in England and Wales die before the age of 65 and 42% before 75.The Men’s Health Forum is calling for action to tackle men’s poor health after their new campaign report Lives Too Short – the State of Men’s Health shows that too many men die young and that men are hit particularly badly by problems like suicide and cancer. 

Survey reveals scepticism over big society's potential. Council staff 'more optimistic' overall than those in voluntary sector. This was one of the main findings of a poll about the big society, carried out by Third Sector and Local Government Chronicle, which attracted nearly 1,200 respondents from readers of the two magazines. 

Office for Civil Society asks councils to avoid 'easy option' of cutting the voluntary sectorData from the National Survey of Charities and Social Enterprises, carried out by the Cabinet Office and the polling firm Ipsos Mori in 2008, showed that 33 per cent of charities working with socially excluded or vulnerable people reported public funding as their most important source of income, compared with 31 per cent of those working with people with mental health needs and 26 per cent of those helping people with learning difficulties. Public health is sidelined in the NHS White Paper, say top public health specialists. Results released by the UK Faculty of Public Health (FPH) in its survey of 3,300 public health specialist members, show that there is real concern and uncertainty over the future of the public health profession and the White Paper’s impact on the nation’s health.

New Training Accreditation for the Third Sector from Royal Society of Public Health.  The RSPH has launched a new training programme accreditation service, specifically for programmes delivered by the not-for-profit sector.  The scheme aims to encourage high standards in the public health training programmes which organisations deliver to their own staff, their supporters or the general public.

The NGO Forum has developed a resource to help voluntary and community sector organisations address health inequalities. The resource ‘A planning guide: health inequalities and the voluntary and community sector’has been produced to encourage voluntary groups and their partners to place tackling health inequalities at the top of their agenda. The guide has been developed by working with some innovative projects within the sector, learning from their experience to help others. To download the guide please click here

Public Health International Conference 2011
